Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble secosteroids responsible for increasing intestinal absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. In humans, the most important compounds in this group are Vit D3 (also known as cholecalciferol) and Vit D2 (ergocalciferol). Cholecalciferol is converted to calcifediol in the liver and bound to water and oxygen in the kidneys to form calcitriol. Calcitriol has a significant role in the absorption of calcium and phosphate, crucial in the healthy growth and regeneration of bone tissue. It also effects neuromuscular and immune functions and works to reduce inflammation.
